“I have a wonderful life and have been given much. I feel that I need to give back. . That is why I am passionate about taking care of patients and going on international ophthalmologic missions.”
Dr. Stromberg is dedicated to top quality service at every stage of a patient’s care. “At EHNW, we’re a team. It starts at the front desk. Everything is important: from the initial receptionist greeting, to my technicians work up, to my examination and performance of surgery.” He also appreciates the collegiality and support from his partner doctors. “I can rest easy knowing that if I go on vacation, my patients will be in good hands with the other EHNW doctors.”
Dr. Stromberg is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with an emphasis on cataract surgery, lower eyelid surgery and diabetic retinopathy. As soon as they meet Dr. Stromberg, patients find his huge smile infectious and his generous heart apparent. This makes it easy for him to establish the rapport that is necessary to best serve the patients. “I see myself as an educator. I try to communicate with my patients and make sure I take the time so that they can understand about their eyes. I want to be in partnership with my patients and help them make good informed choices.”
“Outside of work, my biggest passion is international ophthalmologic mission work. It helps to put my life into perspective. The people we help in developing countries have very little money and resources. Helping these people to regain their vision is a miracle for them.” Dr. Stromberg has donated countless hours to support the work of Medical Teams International formally NW Medical teams. Since 1991, he has made 18 trips abroad with MTI and helped hundreds of people in Honduras, Peru and Mexico.
Over the years, his support at MTI has extended far beyond his surgical trips. He has expended a tremendous amount of effort volunteering locally with MTI. He has recruited other ophthalmologists, helped with fundraisers, organized the ophthalmologic equipment and assembled a portable eye surgical unit. For several years he served on the Medical Advisory Committee at MTI. In 2003, his tireless efforts were recognized when he received the Spirit of Life award from MTI. His next trip will be in 2009, when he returns to Peru with Dr. Bock and Dr. Chalmers.
Service is a core value in the Stromberg family. Dr. Stromberg’s wife, Debi, has been a huge support to him and has accompanied him on many of his international trips. They have three children. Josh and Luke are now adults and Stephanie is still in high school. All three children have participated in the medical missions. The family is very active in their church, and Dr. Stromberg recently returned from chaperoning a youth service project in Tijuana Mexico. The youth group helped build houses, fixed roofs and led children’s club.
In between work, family and volunteering, Dr. Stromberg squeezes in many hobbies (too many according to his wife). He loves woodworking, fly-fishing and the outdoors. He is an amateur naturalist with interests in birding, gardening and beekeeping. In fact, he has been a beekeeper since 5th grade and has never lost his fascination with these creatures. “Keeping bees gives you a real pulse on what is going on in the world around you. They are complex insects with amazing communications and social hierarchy.”
