"I love being an ophthalmologist. Modern technology has given us great tools that allow us to help most patients. I enjoy a very rewarding career."
Dr. Chalmers is a comprehensive ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, laser vision correction surgery and eyelid surgery. For him, eyelid surgery exemplifies the art of medicine because every person's eyelid is uniquely shaped. Dr. Chalmers combination of medical expertise and artistic skill enables him to create eyelid curvatures that look natural. Cataract and laser procedures on the other hand, require great precision, attention to detail, and the mastery of very sophisticated technology. Dr. Chalmers has 20+ years of experience performing all of these procedures and achieves consistently excellent results.
Dr. Chalmers has been part of EHNW since its inception and has great admiration for the entire staff of EHNW. "My partner doctors are outstanding, and our employees strive to deliver personal and caring services to all of our patients." Dr. Chalmers is Medical Director of EHNW's surgery center, enabling him to closely monitor surgical outcomes for the eastside EHNW physicians.
Like many of the EHNW doctors, Dr. Chalmers has been a leader in his profession. He has served as President of the Clackamas Medical Society. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has served on their Practicing Ophthalmologists Advisory Committee for Education. The advisory committee reviews and edits Academy educational publications to ensure their relevance to practicing ophthalmologists. He is also a Past-President of Vision Northwest, a non-profit organization that serves the needs of the blind.
Dr. Chalmers has served as President and is currently Medical Director of the local chapter of Amigos de las Americas, a non-profit organization that sends young adults to Latin America to work on public health projects in rural communities. When he was a teenager in 1972, Dr. Chalmers went to Honduras with this group. His daughter Caroline also participated in the program.
In 1988-89, Dr. Chalmers was one of the first Oregon ophthalmologists to volunteer with NW Medical Teams, performing cataract surgery in Oaxaca, Mexico. He has continued his involvement with many subsequent trips to Mexico and Central America. In 2007, Dr. Chalmers and Dr. Bock traveled to Coya, Peru to perform strabismus surgery on children and adults. They were among the first physicians from the United States to provide this operation in this area. In 2009, he plans to return to Peru again.
Dr. Chalmers and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children: Peter, Caroline and Annie. Over the years, the family has traveled extensively, enjoying historical sites, cultural diversity and adventure. At home, he and Barbara take great pleasure in gardening, hiking and skiing. Dr. Chalmers also enjoys his weekly tennis game. He has a passion for Oregon wine and is a member of the Oregon Wine Brotherhood.
